Printing Blankets: Selection and Maintenance Guide

In offset printing machines, the blanket is one of the most important tools through which ink is transferred to paper. The quality, selection, and maintenance of the blanket are critical factors that directly affect print quality, machine efficiency, and operating costs. In this article, we will examine blanket types, selection criteria, usage principles, and maintenance procedures in detail.

01What is a Printing Blanket and What is Its Function?

Printing blankets are elastic-surfaced tools located between the two main cylinders of an offset printing machine: the platen (impression) and inking cylinders. The ink image taken from the plate cylinder appears completely reversed on the blanket surface. Then, when the paper passes over the blanket, the ink is transferred to produce the original image on the output paper. This system is called "offset" because the ink is not transferred directly from the plate to the paper, but through the blanket.

A high-quality blanket can improve print quality by 40%. The elasticity and surface roughness of the blanket directly determine the ink transfer rate.

02Structure of Printing Blankets

Professional printing blankets have a complex structure consisting of multiple layers. The top layer (surface) is the most critical section determining print quality. This layer transfers ink through its microporous structure. The underlying layers are called backing layers and provide blanket flexibility, durability, and temperature resistance. The bottom layer (base) ensures mechanical durability and adhesion to the cylinder. Modern high-quality blankets are made with synthetic materials and are 3-5 times more durable than standard rubber blankets.

03Blanket Types and Selection Criteria

Printing blankets are divided into various types according to production technology. Compression blankets are preferred in print shops aiming for high quality. The top surface of these blankets is structured with very fine pores and transfers ink perfectly while being tolerant to machine pressure fluctuations. Standard blankets are a more economical option for general-purpose printing. Ultrasmooth blankets are preferred for applications requiring high-resolution and detailed printing. Quick-drying blankets are used in print shops using UV or latex inks.

04Blanket Thickness and Tolerance

Standard printing blanket thickness ranges between 1.2 mm and 1.8 mm. The correct thickness should be selected depending on machine design and ink type used. Blankets that are too thick create installation difficulties, while blankets that are too thin do not provide adequate flexibility. Blanket thickness tolerance is determined according to ISO 9598 standard. Deviations should not exceed 0.5%, otherwise print quality decreases. Thickness measurement should be made from 5-6 different points of the blanket, and the average value should be within the standard range.

05Blanket Installation and Tension

Blanket installation on the machine must be done by professional technicians. Improper installation can cause print quality problems, machine failures, and even safety risks. Blanket tension directly affects the ink transfer rate. Loose tension causes ink transfer problems, while excessive tension causes the blanket to lose elasticity and wear prematurely. Standard tension should be adjusted between 50-80 Newton values depending on blanket type and machine design.

06Cleaning Blanket Surface

The blanket surface must be cleaned regularly. Ink residues, paper fiber particles, and chemical deposits can clog blanket pores. This situation leads to reduced ink transfer and color problems. During cleaning, hard brushes or abrasive materials should never be used. Standard cleaning solvents provide effective cleaning without damaging the blanket surface. Daily operational cleaning should be done every 5,000-10,000 printed pages. Deep cleaning should be done monthly or at the end of a period.

07Blanket Rejuvenation Procedure

Despite intensive use, the blanket surface gradually wears as its pores become clogged and elasticity decreases. Rejuvenation procedure is an effective method to extend blanket life. In this process, specialized chemical solvents and pressure application clean the pores of the blanket surface and partially restore elasticity. Rejuvenation can extend blanket life by 30-40%. However, rejuvenation is an external service and requires advanced technology, so costs must be considered.

Transportation and storage of blankets is also an important factor. Blankets should be stored on flat surfaces, away from direct sunlight, in environments with humidity control. Curled or folded blankets may be very difficult to restore.

Regular blanket maintenance can increase blanket life by 2-3 times. Proper cleaning and rejuvenation procedures can reduce annual maintenance costs by 20-30%.

08Blanket Replacement Periods

Blanket life varies depending on the ink used, printing speed, pressure settings, and maintenance quality. Under standard conditions, high-quality blankets are sufficient for 500,000-750,000 printed pages. As print volume increases or under heavy pressure conditions, blanket life shortens. Signs indicating blanket replacement need are: uneven ink transfer, color or tone loss, visible cracks or damage on blanket surface, loss of elasticity. If any of these signs appear, the blanket should be replaced immediately. Blankets not replaced in time not only reduce print quality but can also damage machine cylinders.
